Alexander von Humboldt travelled from Berlin out into the wider world, as far as South America and Siberia – driven by a curiosity to understand and investigate that world. Today, on the 250th anniversary of his birth, the world is investigating Alexander von Humboldt, as the Stiftung Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss joins forces with the Goethe-Institut to stage a two-day festival on 13 and 14 September 2019.
How can virtual reality help us experience the Humboldtian cosmos? What can we learn from indigenous knowledge, and what role does Alexander von Humboldt play in contemporary artistic practice? International artists and scholars will present exhibitions, installations, performances, lectures and music exploring the ideas and findings of Humboldt as a naturalist surveyor of the world, which are now more relevant than ever before. Still young at 250!
Exhibitions and performances
In two exhibitions you will be able to discover contemporary and historical outlooks on Alexander von Humboldt from Latin America. Several perfomances help to understand decolonial perspectives on Latin American realities and by means of virtual reality and 360˚ films you can find out about indigenous perspectives, taking a virtual walk in Alexander von Humboldt’s footsteps.
Lectures and discussions
On Friday night you can grasp the current relevance of Alexander von Humboldt in a talk by his biographer Andrea Wulf. Acquaint yourself with aspects of Alexander von Humboldt’s works and personality on Saturday. And you can take part in a panel discussion on the continuing impact of Alexander von Humboldt, live from Berlin, Novosibirsk and Bogotá.
And there is also a family programme: Become familiar with South American stories and rearrange Alexander von Humboldt’s Naturgemälde (nature painting).
Projections on the east facade
On both, Friday and Saturday, you can experience Alexander von Humboldt in moving pictures and quotations by means of projections on the east facade of the Humboldt Forum and let indigenous naturalists show you the starry sky of Amazonia.
Music and DJ sets
And last but not least: Dance to Latin American sounds and beats!
