This guided tour will give you an insight into the collection of musical instruments and the unique Berlin Phonogram Archive. Using the Edison phonograph as an example, you will learn about the beginnings of sound recording, which is omnipresent today in the form of music streaming services or voice messages on cell phones. Listen to historical wax cylinder recordings, learn exciting facts about collecting immaterial cultural heritage and the beginnings of popular music. Discuss with our educators the ethical questions associated with collecting voices, city sounds and music, especially when they originate from colonial contexts or prisoner-of-war camps from the First World War. Finally, you can immerse yourself in sound experiences from all over the world in the listening room.
