Filigree mural paintings strike the eye in the stair hall above Portal 1. The graphic elements are reminiscent of the architecture of the Berlin Palace and create a connection to the Baroque façades of the Schlüter Courtyard. However, on closer inspection it becomes clear that these are not architectural shapes. Rather, the ornaments are inspired by objects that can also be seen in the adjoining exhibitions. They are outlines of masks, vessels and sculptures – outstanding exhibits from the collections of the Ethnologisches Museum (Ethnological Museum) and the Museum für Asiatische Kunst (Asian Art Museum). Visitors can look up the objects in books laid out in the stairwell.
“The work GLOBAL BAROCC ‒ CCORAB LABOLG succeeds in capturing excellently the complexity of the goals of the Humboldt Forum in two media using contemporary artistic techniques,” stated the jury. “The mural painting picks up the Baroque architecture of the previous building, presenting outstanding exhibits of the collections of the Humboldt Forum, both systematically and playfully, as requisites of linear architectural elements. The fine line drawings use digital techniques in a contemporary setting to show the unsurpassable nature of the techniques to which the exhibits owe their existence. This creates an expansive all-over mural painting that appeals to all age groups and social classes. The same applies to the books in the stair hall, which provide all the required information on the exhibits. They are presented in the book through photographs and also miniaturised drawings. This creates a multilayered multimedia presentation of this microcosm of the Humboldt Forum. The work is unreservedly worthy of 1st prize.”
