1989/90 is the great caesura in modern German history. A state, the GDR, collapses and wakes up in a new political and social system after a collective stupor. These are years of change: Treuhand, the capital Berlin, unemployment, demolition of the Palace of the Republic. Somewhere, blooming landscapes emerge, potholes are filled in and all-day childcare disappears. Two countries are painfully growing together. A feat of strength that challenges society and politics in many ways. Change is also taking place in the West, but it is particularly true of the East: nothing remains as it was.

Today – 35 years after the Peaceful Revolution – the process of coming to terms with the past is gaining momentum. Discussion, anger, debate, reconciliation and rejection are haunting bookshops, feuilletons and telegram groups. East and West Germany are back on the agenda – or were the differences never gone?

In five conversations, voices from East and West address the most emotional questions of the present: What makes the East special? What makes the West? And who are we? This Germany.
