Afro-Caribbean transcendence, evocative chants and booming drum rhythms – in 2022 Combo Chimbita released IRÉ, an acclaimed album that pours all the anger and angst, but also the empathy and longing of our time into an extraordinary work.
Combo Chimbita is the collaborative project of Carolina Oliveros (vocals, guacharaca), Niño Lento es Fuego (guitar), Prince of Queens (bass, synthesizer) and Dilemastronauta (drums), who join forces to transcend conventional concepts of time and nationality.
Combo Chimbita refer to themselves as “Abya-Yalistas” – from “Abya Yala,” an indigenous name used in Colombia and Panama to refer to the Americas. “Music is a means of connection across times, territories and generations,” says Prince of Queens. “It’s important to listen and feel the desire to change and make things better,” adds Oliveros, summing up IRÉ’s transcendent intention to heal and create a new world through the power of music.
