Also on stage that evening will be the band Merope who have been in close musical contact with Stella Chiweshe, presenting their very own version of Lithuanian-inspired folk music. Strictly speaking, Merope is not a “Lithuanian band” at all, as the band members come from various countries in Europe, but then their music revolves around the vocals and Kanklės playing of world-traveling Lithuanian Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė. Merope’s uniquely atmospheric sound is more of a prime example of how Lithuanian folk influences have found a place in the global ocean of experimental world sounds. They weave elements of electronic, ambient, indie and traditional music into a very contemporary understanding of trans-cultural music.
