Ibrahim Ahmad is an award-winning young Sudanese filmmaker. Born in Lebanon, he migrated to Sudan as a teenager in 2006, after the war. Although there was no film school in his home country, he discovered a passion for a career as a filmmaker. Despite being self-taught, he has built a comprehensive network of colleagues and festival programmers from national and international organisations. His documentary film Khartoum Offside was awarded best documentary film by the Africa Movie Academy Awards. You Will Die at 20 was awarded the Golden Lion of the future at the Venice Film Festival 2020, and was the first Sudanese feature film for over a decade to be shown in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
During the most recent Sudanese revolution, Ahmad played a leading role in documenting and processing the atrocities and crimes perpetrated by the old regime, as his contribution to justice and the shaping of a new era for his country.
Mohamed Kheidr I Egypt I 2021 I 26 min I language: Arabic, with English subtitles
Tuk-tuk tells the story of Walaa, a woman forced to support her family alone after her husband emigrates, leaving her behind. To pay for her children’s schooling and her mother’s medication, Walaa, like so many Egyptian women, takes to the wheel of a tuk-tuk to make ends meet. But to rent the tuk-tuk, Walaa must sign a series of promissory notes, committing to pay back the money in instalments. The film highlights the difficulties women face when they take on roles traditionally occupied by men, and casts a spotlight on the problem of Egyptian women who are forced to take on debt, and are then jailed because they cannot pay back the money borrowed.
