Eye-to-eye introduction by Swati Thiyagarajan, ecologist, environmentalist and filmmaker, India/South Africa
This film follows a group of hard-nosed, surly men in Tanganyika – now Tanzania – who catch wild animals to sell to western zoos. When a visitor arrives, a photographer from Basle zoo, an enchanting revolution is set in motion as the young woman adopts first one, then two, then three baby elephants. In typical Hollywood style, Hatari! proves how tough guys like John Wayne and Hardy Kruger can be re-educated into gentle giants with the help of baby elephants.
