It was supposed to offer art and conviviality, to symbolize the flourishing SED state. Films for children and adults served this goal; two from the opening year are juxtaposed: “Palace of the Republic – House of the People” traces the history of the square, the construction of the building and its use. Everything fits and shines just as well in the TV children’s film “Was Siggi im Palast entdeckt” (“What Siggi discovers in the Palace”). Age-appropriate appeal and ideological overload intertwine and bear witness to the politicized GDR educational doctrine. Introduction: Ralf Forster
