Eye-to-eye introduction by John Akomfrah, filmmaker and artist, UK
London, in the eve of the 19th century. In a freak show, a doctor discovers John Merrick, ‘the Elephant Man’, who suffers from a rare disease. The young man becomes an attraction in the Victorian society. Lynch adapts the life’s story of this man, whose name in real life was Joseph Merrick, as a biopic and subtle historical drama. In his “Eye-to-Eye” introduction John Akomfrah elaborates on the film’s history of origin and explores interesting references to the current debate about the term ‘race.’
