Eye-to-eye introduction by Vinzenz Hediger, professor of film studies, Goethe Universität, Frankfurt am Main
Like his alter-ego John Huston, the director of the Hollywood classic ‘African Queen’, Clint Eastwood’s character in this film is obsessed by his desire to kill an elephant. This dramatic story is both: a US-American landmark safari film of the 1990s and a critical reflection on Hollywood’s depiction of African countries as a backdrop. Elephants become ‘character actors’ in this film and take centre stage.
