Curator Melanie Krebs uses the new exhibition to explore changes that various Muslim societies and groups have experienced in their encounters with European societies since the mid-19th century. She shows how these changes occurred, sometimes voluntarily and sometimes involuntarily, and how they were responded to with both rejection and enthusiasm.
Specifically, the tour focuses on the conflicts of the Ottoman and Persian Empires with the advance of European colonial powers, the reaction of the populations of Central Asia to the idea of nations of the Soviet Union, but also the negotiation processes of today’s Muslim communities in Berlin – because everywhere questions of belonging were and are being renegotiated.
Curators from the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art provide insights into the new presentation of the collection. Ask your questions and get into conversation with the curators – about provenance, dialogue processes with the societies of origin, favorite objects and background knowledge.
