For the installation, Ukrainian historical recordings of the Berlin Phonogramm-Archiv are juxtuposed with new recordings of Olha Kolomyyets, a sound artist from Ukraine. These recordings are presented along with stories and contemporary compositions to higlight Ukraine’s resistance in the face of multiple acts of Russian aggression throughout the last centuries.
Olha Kolomyyets is an ethnomusicologist. As a Professor she teaches disciplines related to the various aspects of the phenomenon of music and its roles and functions in the life of people of her native country, Ukraine, and the other world cultures, the East including.
Her pedagogical activity is strongly connected to her scholarly interests, the main area of which encompass music and widely interpreted identity, music and ethnic minority. In addition to Dr. Kolomyyets’ main pedagogical and scholarly occupation, she is professionally affiliated with the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM) as a member (since 2007) and a Liaison Officer (since 2012). Dr. Olha Kolomyyets is a Fulbright Scholar. She conducted her Fulbright research project at the University of Chicago in 2015-2016 with prof. Philip Bohlman being her project faculty advisor. She is also a recipient of many other awards and scholarships, most recent among them from JESH Ukraine, Wissenschaftkolleg zu Berlin and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Ethnological Museum and the Asian Art Museum in Berlin).
Maria Oneshchak, actress at Les Kurbas Academic Theatre of Lviv (since 2004) and lead singer of the Ukrainian ethno band Kurbasy. She was born in Ivano-Frankivsk. After school graduation she moved to Lviv to study drama at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Faculty of Culture and Arts, which she graduated in 2004. Maria also has a qualification in phycology. Maria is a voice and acting coach.
Natalia Rybka-Parkhomenko is a native of Kharkiv, a city on the eastern past of Ukraine. A graduate of an art school, majoring in drama and film acting. Worked at various theaters and participated at a number of acting and musical projects across Ukraine and abroad. A resident actor at Les Kurbas Academic Theatre of Lviv for last 16 years. Lead singer at ethno-band Kurbasy since 2009. Natalia is a teacher of acting and a vocal coach.
Yaroslav Krysko is one of the bearers of the kobzar tradition in Ukraine and one of the lead singers of Khoreya Kozatska, the ensemble of ancient authentic Ukrainian music from Kyiv. He is a disciple of such renowned kobzars as Mykola Budnyk and Taras Kompanichenko. For twenty years Yaroslav Krysko was a member and one of the singers at the National Academic Men’s Choral Chapel Dudaryk. Since 2008 he has been a member (bratchyk) of Kyiv Kobzar Guild as well as the initiator and founder of Lviv Guild of Lirnyks and Kobzars.
