Sebastian Dreyer and Ravi Srinivasan invite you on a journey into the world of Indian ragas with the sitar, a string instrument, and tabla drums.

Ragas, the basis of Indian classical music, are complex musical atmospheres that correspond to the different times of day and seasons. They are based on fixed, sometimes strict rules, but at the same time leave room for improvisation and are created in free performance in front of the audience.

Whether pensiveness or expectation, longing or passion, melancholy or exuberance – the Lange Nacht der Museen offers the perfect setting to experience different shades of nocturnal moods musically.

Ravi Srinivasan

Ravi Srinivasan, born in Singapore in 1965, was a violinist with the Sinfonika Ibunegara in Malaysia before receiving many years of training in Indian classical music. As a sought-after tabla virtuoso, percussionist and singer, he has travelled the world with Soname Yangchen, Indigo Masala, Dotschy Reinhardt, Music Ensemble of Benares and Ioanna Srinivasan, among others. He has worked as a composer and soloist for Islenska Operan, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Theater Freiburg, Thalia-Theater Hamburg, NCPA Mumbai RTM Malaysia, Doordarshan Kolkata and has accompanied many renowned Indian artists, including Asad Khan, Pandit Jasraj and Pandit Vijay Shankar. In 2006, his trio Indigo Masala won the Creole World Music Prize in Hanover. Ravi performed in his children’s play Music from the Moon in over 100 performances in Iceland and Greenland. The film version was shown in cinemas across Europe.

Sebastian Dreyer

Sebastian Dreyer is one of the few European instrumentalists who dedicate themselves to Indian raga music in its traditional form. In his playing, he combines the technical possibilities of the sitar with the subtle creative means of classical Indian singing. His raga interpretations are narrative and take the audience on an enthralling journey of sound. Sebastian Dreyer learnt to play the sitar in Germany and India with Gisela Tarwitt and Partha Chatterjee. He performs internationally, teaches and has taken part in various cinema, television and theatre productions.
